Keep reading to find out what to do, where to swim, where to stay and much more – on the island of Krk.

How to get there

The island of Krk is connected to the mainland by bridge. The bridge makes it one of the most accessible, and therefore one of the most visited Croatian islands. However, its popularity and proximity to the central European countries (especially Slovenia) also have drawbacks. The beaches as well as the roads get very crowded during the summer months.

So, if you’d like to avoid getting stuck in traffic, here’s what we recommend:

  1. Visit Krk in the pre- or post-season
  2. In peak season, avoid traveling on weekends and during rush hours.

What to do

Sightseeing

When you’ve had your fill of sports or leisure, it’s time to discover the island’s popular and hidden gems:

  • Old town of Krk – You can wander around the town’s fortified walls and then visit the Frankopan castle built in the 12th century.
  • Town of Vrbnik – A place where you can enjoy the local wines “žlahtina” and the bubbly “valomet”, but also try to squeeze through what is arguably the narrowest street in the world with a width of only 40 cm.
  • Biserujka – This cave is a perfect option for either bad weather or scorching heat as the temperature underground is at constant 13°C.
  • Island of Košljun – It can be visited by a boat-taxi. It is home to a monastery/museum and a handful of Franciscan monks who still live there.
  • Moon Plateau – If you take the “Path to the Moon” from Baška, it will take you to an elevated plateau whose surface resembles that of the moon. From there, you can enjoy panoramic views of the island and the sea.
  • Aquarium in Baška – Another place worth visiting, especially on a rainy day. You can see over 100 species of fish.

Events

Krk is a host of many events that take place during (almost) the whole year. Culinary events, music events, festivals, sports events – choose your favorite among them.

Where to swim

You can choose more popular beaches near larger towns:

Or secluded beaches* away from the crowds:

*keep in mind that not all of the beaches are accessible by car so you might have to do a bit of walking

Where to camp

We’ve highlighted 4 campsites on Krk, each in its own corner of the island:

  • Valamar Camping Ježevac is a year round 4-star campsite, perfect for families. It is located on a walking distance from the center of Krk to the east. While spending a week there is not cheap, the campsite offers great value for money.
  • Campsite Omišalj has several unique features that you won’t find in other campsites, such as a private ZOO. There isn’t much natural shade in the campsite which makes it perfect for spring and early autumn camping.
  • Valamar Camping Baška is one of the favorites among active guests. All the fun features and a heated pool make it popular among families as well. It features an impressive pebble beach, but renting or bringing your own sun umbrella to the beach is a must as there is no natural shade.
  • Campsite Tiha – Šilo offers an abundance of sun – even too much in the summer, since there are no trees near the beach. In recent years, the campsite has invested into new mobile homes of local production, which are among the best on the Croatian coast.
